Hypoallergenic gold drop earrings by C'Bella Jewelry

What Is Hypoallergenic Jewellery?

You'll see "hypoallergenic" on a lot of jewellery, but it's rarely explained. Here's what the word means, what it doesn't, and how to use it when you're shopping.

What does hypoallergenic mean?

Hypoallergenic means less likely to cause an allergic reaction. It doesn't mean a piece can never cause a reaction for anyone – everyone's skin is different. In jewellery, it usually means the piece is made from metals that are generally well tolerated and low in nickel release.

Why nickel matters

Nickel allergy is one of the most common causes of skin reactions to jewellery. In the UK and EU, rules limit how much nickel jewellery that touches the skin is allowed to release, but cheap or unbranded pieces bought from unknown sellers may not always meet them.

Metals usually considered hypoallergenic

  • Stainless steel – durable, waterproof and a popular choice for sensitive skin.
  • Titanium – very light and commonly used for piercings.
  • Higher-carat solid gold and platinum – well tolerated but expensive.

Metals more likely to cause problems

  • Unknown "mixed metal" alloys
  • Brass and copper-based fashion jewellery, which can also turn skin green
  • Low-quality plating that wears through quickly to a reactive base

How to shop for hypoallergenic jewellery

  • Check the base metal, not just the plating. "Gold plated" tells you about the surface; what's underneath matters for your skin once you've worn it for a while.
  • Look for clear material information on the product page.
  • Start small with studs or a fine chain if you're unsure how your skin will react.

All C'Bella jewellery is made from hypoallergenic stainless steel with 18K gold plating or a polished silver tone, so it won't turn your skin green. Read more in best everyday jewellery for sensitive skin and best earrings for sensitive ears.

A note on allergies

If you have a known severe metal allergy, or a reaction doesn't settle, speak to a pharmacist or your GP. A patch test can confirm exactly which metals to avoid.
