"Waterproof jewellery" has become one of the most popular phrases in fashion jewellery. But unlike watches, jewellery doesn't come with an official water rating, so the word can mean different things depending on who's selling it. Here's what it should mean – and how to tell the difference.
What "waterproof" means for jewellery
For jewellery, waterproof means the piece can get wet in everyday life – in the shower, while washing your hands, at the gym or in the sea – without rusting, tarnishing quickly, changing colour or turning your skin green. It's really about the material, not a special coating.
Materials that handle water well
- Stainless steel – strong, rust-resistant and tarnish-resistant. With gold plating on top, it gives the look of gold without the worry. This is what all C'Bella jewellery is made from.
- Solid gold – doesn't rust or tarnish, but it's expensive.
- Titanium – light and very durable, often used for piercings.
Materials that don't like water
- Brass and copper-based fashion jewellery – can darken quickly and leave green marks on skin.
- Sterling silver – doesn't rust, but tarnishes over time, especially with chlorine and sweat. Read more in our stainless steel vs sterling silver comparison.
- Pearls, natural stones and glued settings – the metal may be fine, but water, soap and chemicals can damage the stones or loosen glue.
Does waterproof mean indestructible?
No. Even waterproof gold plated jewellery is affected by friction and harsh chemicals over time. Rings and bracelets that rub against surfaces wear faster than earrings or necklaces. Bleach, chlorine cleaners and some self-tan products are the biggest enemies of plating.
How to look after waterproof jewellery
- Rinse with fresh water after the sea or pool, then pat dry.
- Wipe with a soft cloth now and then to keep the shine.
- Avoid bleach and strong cleaning products.
- Store pieces separately so they don't scratch each other.
