If you've had a "gold" ring turn your finger green, it's fair to be cautious about stainless steel. The good news: stainless steel itself is one of the most tarnish-resistant metals used in everyday jewellery. Here's what that means in practice.
What tarnish actually is
Tarnish is a chemical reaction on the surface of a metal. Silver reacts with sulphur in the air and turns dark. Copper and brass react with moisture and skin acids and turn green or brown. It's not dirt, so you can't simply wash it off.
Why stainless steel resists tarnish
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron with chromium. The chromium reacts with oxygen to form a very thin, invisible layer on the surface that protects the metal underneath. If it gets scratched, the layer forms again by itself. That's why stainless steel cutlery and sinks stay bright for years.
For jewellery, this means stainless steel:
- doesn't turn dark the way sterling silver does
- doesn't turn your skin green the way brass and copper can
- copes with water, sweat and humidity
Is "tarnish free" really true?
For the steel, mostly yes. For gold plated steel, it's worth being precise. Gold doesn't tarnish either, but plating is a thin layer, and over months or years of wear it can soften or thin out in places that rub, like the underside of a ring. When that happens you see silver-toned steel underneath, not green or black.
So gold plated stainless steel doesn't tarnish, but the gold layer can wear with friction. Brass-based jewellery, by contrast, can both wear and discolour.
What can dull stainless steel jewellery?
- Product build-up: lotion, soap and perfume leave a film that looks like dullness. A wipe with a soft cloth fixes it.
- Harsh chemicals: bleach and strong cleaning sprays can mark the surface.
- Scratches: steel is hard, but storing pieces loose together will scratch them over time.
How to clean stainless steel jewellery
- Mix a few drops of mild washing-up liquid into warm water.
- Soak for a minute, then wipe gently with a soft cloth. Use a very soft toothbrush for chains or stone settings.
- Rinse in clean water and pat dry.
Skip toothpaste, baking soda and silver dips. They're abrasive and can wear down gold plating.
